URCHIN airplay.

September 27, 1999 - Hey people, this is Tomato
givin' a quick, important URCHIN update to y'all.
Sorry it has been a while since there has been
any new URCHIN news or shows for you, but don't
fear - we have been busy like Rocky in training,
jammin', writin' new tunes and tryin' to move the
band to the next level, which is to rock this
world!!! So, here's the
scoop... with rocking the
world in mind, we have acquired some great major
record label interest and we are going to be
doing a series of private showcases for them
which we are inviting all of you to. These
showcases are real important for the band so
definitely get down to them and help us get the
vibe right. We will provide the beers and music
for ya and there is no cover charge. These will
probably be our only October NYC gigs, so spread
the word and let's rock 'em. The first one is
THIS WEDNESDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 29!!!!! The next
one will be scheduled soon, so keep an eye on the
web site for it. Here is the info for the first
showcase:
********** Wednesday,
September 29, 1999 at 9:00 PM
********** Funkadelic Studios
********** 37 West 26th St. (bet. 6th and Bway)
********** 2nd floor, Studio #1
- September
1, 1999 - Foundry Music web site gives great
reviews of Sound of URCHIN's "Space Station
on the 4,5 & 6" and Approval's
"Gotta Make A Poopy". Thanks to Foundry
for the great reviews. Visit
the site to read the full reviews
which include:
"as cliche as this sounds, Sound of URCHIN
creates feel-good music; you pop it in, and your
head starts bopping back and forth, and all you
want is to hear more" about
Space Station. and...
"Gotta make a poopy" (how do you say
that without smiling?) is highly punk influenced,
and over the grinding guitars and jackhammer drum
beats, you will make out some hooting and
hollaring, which one can only assumer is the
"vocal" track" about Approval's
"Gotta Make A Poopy"

- August
28, 1999 - The Reverend B. ILL was sighted
jamming serious lead at the Ween show in Philly
Saturday night at The Electric Factory, in front
of a sold out crowd of 1,000+. Ween invited B-ILL
to play Ween's 3 song encore and ILL got some
total soloing time in. Cash says he was broadcast
on the club's big screen, like arena style. After
the show, ILL was hangin' backstage and was
confronted by Phish's own Jonathan Fishman.
Fishman commented on ILL's infamous "Phuck
Phish" scrawling on his guitar!!! ILL,
having just rocked out hard, said he didn't do
much but laugh, but did manage to reply,
"well I guess you can put a "Phuck
Bill" on your drums if you want"!!! HA
HA HA, great reply ILL.
- August
27, 1999:
The Sound of URCHIN get played on NYC's WNEW FM,
102.7, on the tri-state area's highest rated
afternoon show, "The Opie and Anthony
Show"!!!!!
WNEW: The Rock Of New York, plays their first
hip-hop song EVER, The Sound of URCHIN's
"The Rusty Trombone". This song,
written specially for Opie and Anthony's show was
played at 5:30 PM on Friday, which is at the
show's highest rating time, right when all the
communters are driving home. We, here at Steven,
are very excited to witness this first for the
URCHIN boys. This is a great step in the band's
rise to becoming the world's greatest rock band
of the millenium!!!! The funniest thing about the
broadcast was that a listener called in after the
song was played and said he "would rather
have his penis hit with a ball pean hammer than
hear the song again"!!!!!! Another listener
wrote in at the same time and said they loved the
song. So, I think we did our job here.
SO, PEOPLE, BOMB THE STATION
WITH CALLS AND E-MAILS FOR URCHIN, MONDAY THRU
FRIDAY FROM 3-7 PM!!!

- June
29, 1999 - URCHIN studio
watch: Well, the boys were
not able to hit the studio last weekend. Tomato
got his hand smashed while bike riding home from
IMPATH and being cut off by another cyclist who
wasn't watching where he was going. His hand will
be OK for the next show, but last weekend it blew
up like a balloon. Tomato wishes that you
"do not send flowers, please", instead,
"do something good for someone today".
The bike accident, as well as other technical
mishaps at Stonybrook
studios kept the boys from
layin' down tracks, but keep watching Steven news
for a rescheduled studio date.
- June
24, 1999 - URCHIN hit Oklahoma!!! A story on The
Sound of URCHIN for Norman, Oklahoma's WIRE48
punk TV show
was aired on Oklahoma cable. The story features
an interview with Tomato11, Mr. Richard Rickles,
and Scotty Choc from last March's SXSW '99
festival in Austin TX and is pretty funny. Tomato
tries hard not to use his favorite four letter
words, Rickles spends the interview stickering
people with URCHIN stickers and shooting people
with a water gun, and Choc just sits there
smoking a fat cigar. The show should eventually
be available online, in the meantime visit
the WIRE48 site.
Thanks to Sarah and Maggie from WIRE48
for hooking us up - and look out for these twin
sisters in their totally rockin' band "Same
Day Service" that is gonna give even have
The Breeders seein' double.

- June
21, 1999 - The Sound of URCHIN will be heading
into the studio this weekend to lay down tracks
for a possible upcoming release. Tomato11 says:
"We hope to finally get the live band's rock
versions of the URCHIN repetoire down on tape, as
well as some new songs - and depending on how the
session goes we might release it because everyone
has been askin' us for a good cd of the rock
versions of the tunes. We are also thinking of
pressing a double cd, where one will be the
original hip-hop Barbie Smooth mixes, and the
other will be the rock from these upcoming
sessions. We'll see on that, though." The
band is going into Claude
Coleman Jr's Stonybrook studios
and Cash/Money/Love is gonna engineer it as well
as play some killer bass. Watch Steven news to
see how everything turns out!!!
- June
12, 1999 - The Sound of URCHIN's Tomato11,
Reverend B-ILL and Cash/Money/Love were asked to
play Guy
Heller's (aka Dickie
Moist from The Moistboyz and Flase Front fame)
wedding. This old school wedding version of
URCHIN played mellow instrumentally lounge
versions of At The Barbeque, Alligator, They Call
Me Ciego - as well as some other classic
instrumental jams and a version of Deuce that
they called Deuce-lite. The guys were honored to
play Guy's wedding because he is a legend in his
own right, and there was also great food to be
eaten by all. It was like an extended Wendy's
super bar with a mixture of Mexican, Italian,
American, and French foods. Check out Guy's
really insane web site,
and The
Moistboyz site at Grand Royal.
- June
11, 1999 - URCHIN hits another MP3 site, AMP3.com
and has entered "At The Barbeque" and
"Bat's Taxi" into AMP3.com's
contest to win a cool million!!! Visit www.AMP3.com's
URCHIN page to download more crystal clear URCHIN
MP3s and barrade these guys also with e-mails
saying that URCHIN should win the contest hands
down and become AMP3.com's
artists of the year!!!!!!!

- June
10, 1999 - URCHIN gets on the MP3 trip!!! Visit www.MP3.com's
URCHIN page to download great sounding URCHIN
MP3s!!! Be sure to barrade MP3.com
with e-mails telling them how much you dig The
Sound of URCHIN!!!!! This new format of sound
file is taking the world by storm and messing up
the corporate music world for the time being.
Thanks to MP3.com
for hooking us up and for giving us a parental
advisory on the lyrics.

- June
6 1999 - Jon't and Be King of Approval get
together to record for the first time since the
accident in 1996!!! They have finally put the
finishing touches on their 12 years in the making
effort, "Cob 9"!!! At the session they
recorded intense versions of Approval faves like
"Gotta Make A Poopy", "Channel 35
Keeps Me Alive/I Just Saw The Bunny",
"Jon't's Clothes Don't Fit Be",
"Hickory Driftwood", "The Tell You
Later Party", and a brand new Approval
classic called "I'm Ready". Richie
Washington, Dunce Fallopian, Hemaphrokid, The
Approval Drum Major, Lee Oasker, and Mr. bripsky
were all on hand to lend vocal help to this
classic recording session. Soon you will be able
to hear Approval on the Steven site and buy
copies of the cd.
- Memorial
Day 1999 - URCHIN had a kickin' Barbeque/jam at
the Brookridge farm House in Lambertville, NJ.
ILL and Cash cooked up some sick ribs and burgers
for everyone's hungry stomachs. The food was so
hot it was melting Cash's new grill - no joke.
Then Choc, Weeves and Tomato went to AC until the
wee hours where Choc one himself some sick
amounts of money at craps, Tomato came home with
80 clams, and Weeves lost some dough but was in
excellent spirits in lieu of the loss.
- May
1999 - COVER magazine, this totally hip New York
entertainment mag, does a great review of the
URCHIN cd!!! Read the review by
Bernard Shanley
and go out and pick up the magazine at any
newstand.
- April
12, 1999 - URCHIN is working on new material to
add to their already monstrous array of kickin'
tunes!!! At a secret rehearsal on B-ILL and
Cash's Brookridge Farmhouse, the boys put
together new jams rumored to be titled "The
Alligator", "Local 48" (an ode to
their roadie), "The Magic Whale, and a live
version of the URCHIN diehard classic, "They
Call Me Ciego". Watch for these songs to be
performed in the near future at a gig near you.
- February
23, 1999 (with March 2nd
addition*) - URCHIN gets
new guitarist for live shows!!! Barbie Smooth has
recently announced that he will not be performing
with the live band, due to wanting to keep his
focus on writing and producing for URCHIN. Scotty Rock (*known
as of March 2nd as Scotty Choc), a
long time friend of Tomato11's, performed at the
band's NY show last week, picking up where
Barbie's guitar left off. He was welcomed by the
fans and added his great sound and style to the
URCHIN mix. We, here at Steven, all welcome Scotty Rock to
the URCHIN roster and wish him the best with the
band!!!!
- February
5, 1999 - URCHIN plays Ithaca, NY. We had a blast
with Coyote in Ithaca, they rock. The place was
packed and we actually got the crowd to limbo,
for the first time ever, during the
"Brooklyn Jacuzzi" section of Space
Station - we had been wanting to do that for some
time. We also had the crowd doing a call and
response chant of "Titanic" and
"Friends" - it was like a dream come
true. Peace to Amit, Esteban, the New City posse,
and the one and only Crawdads, and thanks to
Coyote's keys-man for playing "Deal"
with us!!!
- January
7, 1999 - Once again, Broadcast.com hooks up the
URCHIN!!!! Broadcast.com's newsletter went out
today to its 12,000 subscribers with a hyperlink
to hear a full live Sound of URCHIN show recorded
at The Baggot Inn in NYC recorded by DJ Phon-X!!!

Broadcast.com's site to hear a complete live

This recording even includes a rare URCHIN gem
called "Goodbye Fifteeners", only
performed live at this show!!! (set list
includes: Bat's Taxi, Quiz Show Spy,
Briceskating/YYZ/Briceskating, The Junius Ponds,
Space Station on the 4,5 & 6/These are the
People of the Time, At the Barbeque, Goodbye
Fifteeners, Green Green Gold)

- January
11, 1999 - The Sound of URCHIN gets great review
in Belgium!!! Go figure, the first place overseas
to get into the boys is Belgium. That is
somewhere near France, right? Well, anyway, a
zine called L'ENTREPOT
managed to get a hold of the URCHIN cd and they
dug it. Here is a copy of the review:
"The Sound of URCHIN brings fresh sounding
Hip-Hop. The six songs are piece by piece easy
listening songs with a high sing along level. The
storytelling lyrics works out very well and give
it a bit an De La Soul feeling. In a song as
"Quiz show spy" you hear that the guys
have listen to funk, soul and jazz music.
"At the barbeque" is my favorite story,
real funny song. And that is what I think is the
intention is of "The sound of URCHIN",
entertain people. That's what this CD is al about
entertainment, and good entertainment.
- 1999 NEW
YEARS MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER
Well, 1998 was a great year for Steven Records.
The Sound of URCHIN has been taking off like a
plane and has just finished out the year with an
opening spot on WEEN's New Years Mini-Tour in NY,
Philly and DC. The shows rocked and the WEEN fans were
won over by the URCHIN boys
every night. Richard Rickles is now a full time
member of the band as "Tambourine Specialist
and Dancer", and should be commended for
helping to get the WEEN crowds up off their feet
and into the band. Gene Ween even called on
Richard Rickles during the DC show to dance on
stage with them, and Rickles took the invitation
to his heart and cut a rug like Fred Astaire for
two of their songs.
We look forward to another great year for The
Sound of URCHIN and those other artists on my
label. Cheers, and thanks for all the support in
helping with the growth of the URCHIN and keeping
up with the Steven site!!!!
Best regards,

Steve Pennsylvania
Owner and Founder of Steven Records
